Choosing the wrong web partner costs you time, money and nerves. Here are seven questions that instantly separate the serious ones from the ones to avoid.
The market is full of offers — from agencies to freelancers fresh off a two-week course. These questions help you spot who knows the job, without having to be an expert yourself.
1. Can I see your work live?
Not portfolio images — real, live sites you can open and try. If someone can't show a single working site, that's a red flag.
2. Who specifically works on my project?
At big agencies a senior often sells and a junior learns on you. Ask who will actually do the work. At small studios it's usually the same people you talk to — which is an advantage.
3. Is the site custom or a template?
A template isn't always bad, but you should know what you're paying for. Custom design sets you apart and fits your brand; a template is cheaper but shared by thousands of others.
4. Is the site optimised for Google and mobile?
A site that doesn't open well on a phone, or that Google can't find, isn't doing its job. This should be a given, but it isn't always — so ask.
5. How long does it take, and what's the process?
A serious partner has a clear process and can give you a rough timeline. If the answer is vague, the collaboration will probably be vague too.
6. What happens if I don't like it?
Ask about revisions. A good process works in iterations — first you align on direction, then you build, with refinements until it's right.
7. Do I get support after launch?
A website isn't "build and forget". Ask whether they stay available for changes and technical support after launch.
The key: the best agency for you isn't necessarily the biggest or the cheapest — it's the one whose work and approach match your goal, and who's easy to communicate with.
